Portfolio of Hope

Life, Love, & Death:

This is what makes war so shocking, because we see everything so ruthlessly taken away from us, with such disregard for who we are.

In the footage we’re seeing of the atrocities happening in Palestine amidst the Israeli/Gaza conflict, we’re seeing first-hand how quickly humanity can be stripped away from us.

Last night, watching the news, a video was shown of a father carrying his dead son in a body bag. The grief on his face, the unspent love wasted, a life wasted, death taking hold.

The three things which we all experience, a right of passage of being human- life, love and death- shown in a 30 second clip, as casually as the weather forecast that followed, as though such loss is commonplace, a daily occurrence. It’s unbearably sad, and I worry that showing such footage so nonchalantly is going to make people desensitised to the realities* of what’s happening.

*The reality being that over 7000 Palestinians, including at least 3000 children, have been murdered… With no prospect of a ceasefire in sight, and the ground incursion having not even started yet, the number of deaths is inevitably going to rise and, most likely, considerably so…

the universal experience of humanity

Hearing the death toll rising every day on the news (on Tuesday, for example, 700 people were killed in just 24 hours), can make us forget that behind every single death, there is so much grief.

Just reflect on the grief you felt when you lost a loved one, and times that by 8500 (the total number of deaths in Gaza and Israel combined)…

That’s at least 8500 people gone, not to mention the people left behind for whom, with their loved ones passing, will also undoubtedly feel as though they have lost a part of themselves too…

Just to put it into perspective in case you are in doubt of how significant 8500 deaths is, consider that, in the average UK high school, there are 986 people. So that’s the equivalent of at least 8 high schools completely wiped out in less than three weeks…

It’s not just people in Palestine who are suffering with all this, either. The impact is widespread across the globe (albeit, outside of Palestine, indirectly).

I know of so many people who are struggling with what’s happening in Gaza, myself included, even though I’m in the UK, over 2000 miles away from it all.

There is coverage of the atrocities literally everywhere.

Every time I switch on the TV, it’s on the news.

Every time I go on my phone, it’s all over social media.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’d rather the coverage be there, we look the other way far too much in life but, I wish that, alongside the coverage, we were doing more to condemn what Israel are doing to innocent Palestinians…

To excuse what is undoubtedly genocide on the basis of Israel seeking ‘revenge’ on Hamas is nonsensical… Surely there must come a point when we say ‘enough is enough’ and, surely, when over 7000 Palestinians have lost their lives, we are already way past that point…

But, apparently not, according to our leaders for, the UK and the US are continuing to offer their ‘unwavering solidarity’ to Israel.

It is this ( ^ ) which upsets me so much. The fact that we’ve been watching acts of genocide taking place every day for almost three weeks and, even worse than doing nothing, even worse than looking the other way, we have been condoning it.

It is this which makes me feel embarrassed to be from the UK.

It is this which leaves me questioning;

‘How can we be sitting by and allowing this to happen?’

How?

when history is being created in which we are on the side of the oppressor…

The fact is that, if Israel stop fighting, then the conflict will end. But, if Palestinians stop fighting, then they will be wiped off the face of the earth… It’s clear who has the upper hand here, and yet, we are still allowing the Israeli government to keep doing this…

Where is our humanity?…

Where is our value of life?…

Where is our concept of morality?…

It’s all seemingly non-existent, and, that’s what I’m struggling to get my head around.
