Whether it’s recording ourselves lip-syncing to Theory of a Deadman’s ‘Hate My Life’ on TikTok, or sharing self-deprecating memes on Instagram, our generation seems to love making light of how much we hate ourselves online.
There’s a difference between light-hearted humour that’s slightly self deprecating and genuinely hating yourself though, and I worry that all the meme accounts on social media, (although admittedly quite funny), are going to result in us seeing fewer people who would really benefit from therapy actually getting therapy.
Why?
Because, if every time we go online we’re seeing our struggles being reflected back to us in the form of memes, our mental ill health being the ‘butt of the joke’, then understandably some of us might come to the conclusion that the way we feel must be “normal”/that everyone feels so bad about themselves…
But, I’m here to tell you that it’s not normal, and that not everyone does feel so bad about themselves. If you feel that way, then you deserve to seek help and know that there is hope for a brighter tomorrow. Don’t sit at home suffering because you think there is no other way. There is, and you deserve to find it.
